PURITY LAW BEER (Reinheitsgebot) – Law on Beer Purity:

The decree known as the Reinheitsgebot (Purity law beer) was issued in 1516 by Duke Wilhelm IV.
The law restricted beer ingredients to: water, barley and lupola. The beer purification law of 1516 was first applied to Bavaria and gradually to other parts of southern Germany. Eventually that law was applied throughout Germany in 1906.
Over time, it was noticed that the production of beer under this law, the constraint of ingredients, it brought about a problem, brewing beer. To avoid this problem, an additional ingredient should was needed. In the 19th century, Louis Pasteur discovered that yeast consists of microorganisms and that its presence was essential to the fermentation process. Therefore, the yeast was officially added as a fourth raw material, in the existing Beer Purity Law.
Finally, according to the Law of Purity, the permitted ingredients for the production of beer were 4: barley, lupola, yeast and water. As for high fermentation beer, the use of malted grain was allowed.
Since 1919, the Law on Beer Purity has had a major impact on the types of beer produced  today.
